Help AANA address a disparaging statistic in medicine – the stark decline in the pursuance of orthopaedics in underrepresented minorities in medicine. The Association of American Medical Colleges revealed 2020 data that shows minority enrollment in medical school to be strong at more than 50%, however only 25.6% of orthopaedic residents are of a minority background. Women have an even steeper decline from 47.9% in medical school to only 16% of orthopaedic residents identifying as female.
AANA is dedicated to the encouragement of underrepresented minorities in medicine to pursue a career in orthopaedics, beginning at the medical school level. Through the efforts of the AANA Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, the Future Scope: Introduction of Arthroscopy and Orthopaedics program was launched.
This full-day didactic and lab component program focuses on introducing underrepresented minorities in medicine to arthroscopy and orthopaedics during their first and second year of medical school. AANA will bring experts to the podium and to the scope to demonstrate an Orthopaedic Surgeon’s Day, pathways to success, and available opportunities.
With the support of DePuy Synthes, an orthopaedic company that is also making diversity and inclusion a priority, this course will seek to inspire your medical school students to pursue a path like the AANA leaders. It is through the generous support of DePuy Synthes that AANA can offer this experience free of charge. This one-day course is ideal for a local audience as we do not provide transportation or overnight accommodations. Registration, breakfast, and lunch will be provided thanks to the generous support of DePuy Synthes.
The program will take place at the J&J Facility in Raynham, MA on November 9th. We ask you to please forward the message below to first and second-year medical students that would like to help us achieve our goal of a more diverse orthopaedic community. Seats are limited, so please have the students apply by September 30th!
