Senior Scientist (Research)

The Center for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias (CARD) is recruiting for a Senior Scientist (Research) to lead a program in Basic, Translational, and Clinical Genomics. CARD is a newly established center located on the NIH main campus in Bethesda, Maryland. This position in CARD is organizationally and administratively located within the Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institute on Aging (NIA); however, CARD represents a joint research effort between the IRPs of NIA and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), both major research components of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

CARD is a translational science-centered research program that seeks to initiate, stimulate, accelerate, and support research in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD), leading to the development of improved understanding, treatments, and cures. CARD supports basic, translational, and clinical research on AD/ADRD.

The successful candidate will work with the Director of CARD to create and enact a strategic plan for CARD’s research efforts in developing and using state-of-the-art genomic approaches to understand disease biology and to aid in disease subtyping, diagnosis, and prediction. CARD is a highly collaborative and mission-focused organization. The Senior Scientist recruited for this position will work extensively with the broader IRP of the NIH, in addition to working collaboratively with relevant groups from government, academia, industry, and other stakeholder organizations. The successful candidate will manage projects and collaborations through project initiation, development, execution, and closeout. The candidate will be responsible for problem solving and making key decisions to ensure completion of multiple projects, goals, and to manage competing priorities.

The successful candidate should be recognized as an international expert and leader in genomics and diagnostics, with demonstrated expertise in managing a complex, outstanding program of laboratory research to include both bench and analytical expertise. The successful candidate will have demonstrated exemplary skills in and innovative approaches and techniques in the use of genomics to both understand pathobiology and as a predictive/diagnostic tool. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to optimize utility of new genomic assays and analytical tools for deployment in large datasets. The candidate will have a track record of working directly with large numbers of human samples and in the organization and execution of highly collaborative national and international research programs. The selected candidate will also have evidence of recognition of senior scientific status by peers with a strong track record in developing basic/translational/clinical research on neurodegeneration, a strong record of productive research in the aforementioned areas, and a publication record in the fields relevant to this position, including the analytical requirements of this position.

The successful individual must have a Ph.D. or M.D. (or M.D., Ph.D.) or equivalent doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences or related fields. It is preferred that candidates have at least 10 years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent and are experts in the application and/or development of genomic sequencing methods from cells and tissue, with demonstrated expertise in emerging single-cell approaches. Experience in the generation and analysis of large-scale (>500 sample datasets) sequencing data is essential. Demonstrated ability to work with RNA, proteins, and extracellular vesicles in human biofluids relevant to monitoring and diagnosing AD/ADRD would be valuable expertise. Experience in neurodegenerative disease research is essential, as is a proven track record in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships.

The successful candidate will manage substantial resources from CARD for funding start-up costs and on-going program operations, and will be responsible for managing budget, personnel, and space within the facility. The incumbent will have a role in assisting the CARD Director in project prioritization, and in identifying research and development opportunities that fit within the program and mission of CARD.

Senior Scientists manage large research programs with responsibility for substantial resources. A Senior Scientist may be granted independent research resources, which are subject to review by the Institute’s Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC). Senior Scientists have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the Center/ Laboratory and interact with the scientists from the IRP and scientific community at large.

Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments.
