NLM is a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), part of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
The Intramural Research Program (IRP) is looking for an outstanding candidate to work on applying computational tools to challenging problems in large-scale microbial genomic analysis.

The candidate will be responsible for:
managing and overseeing tasks and tracking the progress of the computational projects in the laboratory;
participating in ongoing projects by developing, implementing, revising, and documenting computational tools;
designing, developing, and deploying robust computational algorithms for the analysis of microbial genomics data to generate novel hypothesesor insights; leading projects on topics including, but not limited to, deep learning for novel protein family classifi cation, constructing probabilistic models forco-occurrence analysis based on interaction networks, and knowledge-based functional annotations of biosynthesis pathways; and providing training and guidance to junior team members.


The ideal candidate may or may not be a United States citizen and must have a doctoral degree and postdoctoral experience.

We are looking for an individual with:
a proven track record in this area as reflected in recent or pending publications;
a Ph.D. in bioinformatics, microbiology, virology, biostatistics, or a related discipline with intensive training/experience in bioinformatics;
a track record of outstanding research in microbial genomics that demonstrates expert knowledge in genomics, virology, and bioinformatics; expertise in algorithmic implementation, statistical programming, and data manipulation using, e.g., R/Bioconductor, bash, Python, and a wide range of contemporary, open-source bioinformatics tools and database structures; excellent oral and written communication skills as demonstrated by presentations and publications as well as the ability to be highly organized and capable of working on a variety of projects; and a demonstrated experience in staff training and mentoring and outstanding communication and time management skills.
